Cheltenham Festival: Supreme looks on the cards for L'Ami Serge

L'Ami Serge laid down a marker for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival with an impressive victory at Ascot.
Nicky Henderson's four-year-old is 12-1 with Coral after he comfortably landed the three-runner Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle.
The even-money favourite looked a star in the making as he followed up his Newbury success when taking the two-mile contest by seven lengths from Killultagh Vic, after his market rival Emerging Market fell at the second-last flight.
"He's good and he's grown up a lot from Newbury," said Henderson. "The great thing about him is he has a lot of experience in France.
"He ran a stack of times and it was surprising he didn't get his head in front, given the way he goes.
"He is an out-and-out two-miler and is no slouch. I suppose we will go for the Supreme. It wouldn't hurt to go left-handed. That's why we thought about the Challow – if he has a bias, it is going left.
"If there's a two-mile trial at Cheltenham (Trials Day), we'll go there."
L'Ami Serge's rider Barry Geraghty completed a 33-1 double on the Andrew Balding-trained Supasundae (16-1) in the Ascot Underwriting Championship Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.
The huge Galileo gelding travelled well throughout and lengthened away in the closing stages to record a two-and-a- quarter length success from Yarnworth.
Geraghty said: "He did it well. He picked up well from four furlongs out. I'd never sat on him before, but he ran on well and I'm delighted."
Geraghty and Henderson were out of luck with Josses Hill in the Mitie Novices' Chase. Sent off 10-11 favourite to make a winning debut over fences, Josses Hill made several mistakes and had to play second fiddle to the Nicholls-trained Ptit Zig (6-4).
The five-year-old, who had winning form at the top level over hurdles in France last season, had the benefit of two successful runs over fences and put that experience to good use, running out an impressive nine-length winner.
Ptit Zig was given an 8-1 quote for the JLT Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival from Coral, who also make him the same price for the Racing Post Arkle.
"He jumped really well today. His experience was not lost on him," said Nicholls.
"Sam (Twiston-Davies) gave him a kick in the belly two out and he took off. He's a proper horse. He won his Grade One in France last year and ran well in a Champion Hurdle, and ran well at Aintree, but he's not that pacey a horse. We've always looked for him to go chasing.
"He is only five and he has so much improvement to come, physically and mentally. He will be entered in races over two miles or two-and-a-half miles. You wouldn't want to run him over two miles on fast ground. Everyone goes on about Cheltenham, but it is not the be all and end all.
"I haven't thought beyond today. He could possibly go for the Dipper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham over two miles and five furlongs.
"The further he goes the better he might be. I see him as a middle-distance horse who could drop back in trip."
Batavir (5-2 favourite) was very well supported to land the Mitie Handicap Hurdle and David Pipe's representative did not let his supporters down, romping to an easy four-length win from Spartan Angel under Tony McCoy.
"He's a nice little horse and it wasn't complicated – they gave me an easy lead. I hoped he'd get this trip and he's done it nicely," said the champion jockey
Trainer James Evans admitted he could afford to "dream a little" after Desilvano (3-1) followed up his Market Rasen bumper success in the Two Circles "National Hunt" Maiden Hurdle by a length and a quarter from Bally Beaufort under Liam Treadwell.
The Nick Mitchell-trained Dance Floor King (10-3) was foot perfect in the Champagne Bollinger Novices' Limited Handicap Chase as he defied a 13lb penalty.

Another Injury Boost for Manchester United with crucial player

One of the greatest qualities of Louis van Gaal is that he keeps his head when all around him are losing theirs. After the 4-0 mauling of Manchester United by the Mk Dons in The Capital One Cup, and a 5-3 defeat at Leicester to rub it in, many United fans were freaking out – they were essentially in meltdown as they considered the ramifications of another failed management tenure.

article-2699395-1FD467E600000578-209_634x723

But LvG told us all that this was all part of the process and that things would improve. The performances have still been shaky in part, but the results have most certainly improved.
LvG has to take great credit for this, particularly as he has had a ridiculous amount of injuries to deal with – another problem that he hasn’t moaned about.
So, now that most of the injured players are returning to training, we lick our lips in anticipation of top performances to go with the great results.
The latest player to give Manchester United a fitness boost is Luke Shaw who will reportedly be available for some of the festive program. The Mirror reports:
Luke Shaw to hand Manchester United festive fitness boost by returning from ankle injury.
Luke Shaw is set to return for Manchester United on Boxing Day after recovering from the ankle injury that has kept him out for a month.
We think that Shaw is a joy to watch. A real Manchester United type who must also suit the style of LvG with his adventurous and attacking instincts. When this lad gets a run in the team he’ll become a nailed on starter very soon. Ashley Young has done well in his absence but his tendency to cut back in on his preferred right foot wastes time and opportunity.
Manchester United fans: Is Shaw the undoubted number 1 at left back or will Ashley Young remain first choice after recent performances?

Angel di Maria wins Argentine 'Player of the Year' award

angel di maria Manchester United superstar crowned Player of the Year
Manchester United’s summer signing Angel di Maria has won the ‘Player of the Year’ award in Argentina, ahead of Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
Di Maria joined United in the summer from Real Madrid for a club & British record transfer fee, and has settled into his new club nicely, playing a pivotal role in taking the Red Devils back in top four.
However, the prestigious award has been rewarded based on his outstanding performances for both club and country; the Argentine won the Champions League with Real Madrid last season and continued his rich vein of form in Brazil, picking up the runners-up medal with La Albiceleste in the FIFA World Cup 2014.
According to Aaron Flanagan of The Mirror, Di Maria picked up the award at Olimpia de Plata at a ceremony on Tuesday. It was the first time, Lionel Messi has failed to win this award since 2006.
Messi has been equally brilliant this year – scoring 56 goals for club and country and picking up World Cup player of the tournament award.
Di Maria was one of the stand out players for Real Madrid last season and gave arguably his best performance in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, helping the Los Blancos winning the much coveted La Decima in May.
The 26-year-old left a strong impact in the World Cup as well, scoring a last-gasp winner against Switzerland in knock-out rounds, but missed out the final against Germany due to injury.
Manchester United winger Nani, who is on loan to Sporting, has also won Sporting Lisbon Player of the Year award earlier this month.

Josses a giant?

Smart prospect Josses Hill wowed our Lambourn gallops reporter

JOSSES HILL looked at the top of his game in his winding-up work for a career switch for fences later this week.
Last season's Supreme Novices' Hurdle runner-up has fully recovered from a splint problem that set him back in the autumn, and has shown a penchant for the larger obstacles in his schooling.
His resounding triumph at Aintree in April stamps him as being out of the top drawer, and his appearance at Ascot on Friday is eagerly awaited.
L'AMI SERGE created a big impression when scoring on his first outing since joining Henderson from Guillaume Macaire.
The gigantic gelding travelled and quickened up like a horse to follow at Newbury and has earned a step up the class ladder.
His target is the Kennel Gate Hurdle on the same Ascot card. He looked in very good order in his latest stretch on the Faringdon Road grass.
OPEN HEARTED made a positive start to his chasing career last season and should acquit himself well in handicaps.
He looks ready for a run, and has an entry at Ascot at the weekend.
SUGAR BARON created a favourable impression on his debut and has produced some eyecatching work ahead of the bumper.
The son of Presenting already has experience of Ascot and if the weather remains dry, that would be in his favour.
SIGN OF A VICTORY has been displaced as favourite for the Ladbroke and his chance of landing that prize would be seriously compromised by rain. At this stage he is a doubtful starter.

Napoli vs Parma Preview

In a week that saw Parma sell out in a desperate bid to secure their Serie A survival, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis insists he will not abandon the challenge of restoring his own club's fortunes.
The Gialloblu arrive at the Stadio San Paolo on Thursday night under the ownership of Piacenza-based jeweller Dr Pietro Doca, who has assumed control of the top flight's basement boys at a time of great turmoil.
Not only are Parma rooted to the bottom of the table with only six points from 15 games, they have lost a seventh point due to financial irregularities - a blow which ultimately prompted Tommaso Ghirardi to sell up and walk away.
There is no real danger of relegation for Napoli, but an inconsistent start to the season has left Rafael Benitez's men in seventh place and at risk of being left behind in the race for a Champions League place.
But film producer De Laurentiis has warned any hopeful suitors against trying their luck with a speculative offer for the outfit he rescued from bankruptcy in August 2004.
He told La Repubblica Sport: ``It's been a difficult period but we will compose ourselves and press on as usual with the desire to become the leaders.
``I won't back down. I've been developing this project for 10 years and I will continue to work hard.
``I will never leave Napoli, I do not and I will not yield to anyone. Give us time to improve.''
The Azzurri president is convinced Spanish coach Benitez has enough players of real quality at his disposal to steer the side back into the title race.
``We have a strong team,'' he added. ``(Jose) Callejon and (Gonzalo) Higuain came in from Real Madrid, and then there's (Dries) Mertens.
``Our quality is not up for debate.
``Our international recruitment process has been consolidated and now it's up to our unquestionably extraordinary coach, Benitez.''
Only Juan Camilo Zuniga and Michu present the former Liverpool boss with any injury concerns while under-pressure Parma coach Roberto Donadoni is missing Jonathan Biabiany, Mattia Cassani and Massimo Coda.
Donadoni hopes the change of ownership will bring some much-needed stability to the Ducale club.
``The announcement of the new owners might calm the situation,'' he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. ``But we just need to worry about points and the league table.
``The team spirit has not changed compared to last season and we started last year with the aim of staying up. We certainly had no plans to qualify for the Europa League.
``We changed a lot of players in the summer and then bad injuries just magnified any problems we had on the pitch.

King sets Walkon target

|
Alan King has highlighted April’s Topham Trophy at Aintree as Walkon’s target for the season after recovering from injury. The nine-year-old was pulled up after suffering an injury during April’s Grand National but has since fully recovered and will make his first appearance of the season at Newbury on Wednesday, in the three mile Swegon Group UK Graduation Chase.
King admits he has given the horse extra time to prove his fitness following his problem at Aintree and although he isn’t expecting too much early on, is confident he will be back to top form in the spring for another run in the race he finished second to Triolo D’Alene in in 2012.
“Walkon ran well for a long way at Aintree, but he took the tendon off his hock, so we have had to be patient,” the trainer told his official website. “He doesn’t get extreme distances, but he does love the challenge of the big Aintree fences, so, long term, it would be nice to have another crack at the Topham Trophy, in which he finished second a couple of seasons ago.
“But first we have to get Walkon running again, and it is good to have him back.”
